The pictures on this page are of moth species found in Ashton Vale some are day flying and photographed whilst out on my travels the others have been caught using a Moth trap. The trap is abox with a 15w uva Black light tube attached to the top and two sheets of perspex which funnels the moths down into egg cartons where they stay until day break. If you use a trap make sure you inspect it early in the morning at first light or the birds will feast on the moths, cats can also be a problem and will sit by the trap and catch and eat your prized specimens.Once you have photographed and recorded them put them in a card board box some where safe and release them the next night
![]() | A good source of equipment can be found at Bioquip UK Also a good Moth ID book....Moths of the Btitish Isles..author Bernard Skinner. Although I use a moth trap all that is needed is a white sheet hung against a wall with a light behind it and you will collect lots of moths on a warm summers evening. Also you can have ago at making wine ropes. You will need some thick cord or rope needs to be natural fibres so as to be absorbent. Mix a cheap bottle of red wine with sugar and soak the rope in the mixture. Then cut in to lengths of about a metre and hang from the branches of a bush or tree, |
